Combining gorilla trekking with Masai Mara National Reserve

Combining gorilla trekking with Masai Mara National Reserve  : Did you know that you could combine a safari in Kenya’s savannah plains with a visit to gorillas and other wildlife? It’s possible to add a gorilla trekking tour in Uganda, Rwanda, or the Democratic Republic of the Congo to your gorilla sightings in Maasai Mara.

Combining safaris is the greatest way to see stunning East Africa. On this safari, visitors see gorillas in their natural habitats before visiting Kenya’s Maasai Mara National Reserve, home to the world’s most diverse wildlife, including big cats, the migration of wildebeest, and undulating savannah plains. This safari brings guests closer to the gorillas than a gorilla trekking safari in Rwanda, Uganda, or the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

Thus, gorilla trekking safari involves spending an hour with gorillas, though the entire experience could take two to eight hours, depending on where these stunning and endearing primates are located. This adventure is always carried out in the morning and in only one shift; 8 visitors are allowed to trek one gorilla family per day and this means that gorilla permits are limited in number hence the need for prior booking.

Each gorilla destination (Uganda, Rwanda and D. R. Congo) has got specific prices for gorilla trekking permits. There are eastern low land gorillas in Democratic Republic of Congo located in Kahuzi-Biega national park, while the rare endangered mountain gorillas can be found in Virunga massif which spans across all the three countries and combines Virunga national park in DR Congo, Volcanoes national park in Rwanda and Mgahinga national park in Uganda the Pearl of Africa. Bwindi national park is located in Uganda, just above the Virunga massif and shelters over 50% of total population of mountain gorillas in the whole world.

In Uganda, a gorilla permit costs USD 800, USD 700, and 300,000 UGX for citizens of East Africa, foreign non-residents, and foreign residents, respectively. Gorilla trekking permits in Rwanda cost USD 1500, while in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, permits cost USD 200 for citizens and USD 450 for foreigners. To go gorilla trekking safari, you have to be at least 15 years old. Because this experience involves hiking and travelling long distances through the jungle, physical fitness is a prerequisite.

For those visitors who are disabled, pregnant or elderly, no worries at all since there is a special chair designed for you a sedan seat for gorilla trekking and this can be used in Bwindi National Park in Uganda and Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda.

A sedan seat is carried by a team of 8 energetic porters and it costs 300-500$ each to hire. After an hour of viewing the critically endangered mountain gorillas, they will carry you back to the starting point.

You will have another fulfilling experience when you fly to the Maasai Mara National reserve in southern Kenya after your gorilla trekking safari expedition. This place is known to host the annual wildebeest migration that crosses from Serengeti national park into Kenya every year. Spending 3 to 4 days in this reserve creates everlasting memories since there is a lot to discover including beautiful moments of sunrise and sunset, predators hunting for prey, migration of wildebeests and savannah mammals.
