Detailed itinerary of the safari
Day 1: Arrival and at Grande Barrier with border crossing
On the first day of the safari you will have early morning breakfast at your hotel in Kigali then checkout and set off on a drive heading to Grande Barrier, at exactly 10:30 am you have be at Grande Barrier crossing the border. At 11:15 am you will head to the Virunga tourism office situated at the Grande Barrier border post building opposite passport control, you will fill in all the necessary documents and get your gorilla trekking and volcano trekking permits you to present on these experiences. Then you will transfer to Kibumba tented camp for lunch and in the afternoon you will lounge around, in the evening you will have dinner and stay overnight at Kibumba tented camp.
Day 2: mountain gorilla trekking experience
On the second day of the safari you will have early morning breakfast at your Kibumba tented camp then head to the briefing spot for briefing about mountain gorilla trekking which is conducted by a ranger guide. After the briefing you will head into the forests of Virunga in search for mountain gorillas, the trek takes about 1-3 hours depending movement and location of the gorilla family you are trekking and the terrain. You are to spend one hour in the presence of these beautiful calm creatures taking pictures and loitering around, after one hour you will head back to your camp for lunch and then you will have the rest of the day resting. You will have dinner and stay overnight at Kibumba tented camp.
Day 3: Nyirangongo volcano hike
On the 3rd day of the safari you will have morning breakfast at your camp then head to the Kibati Ranger post where the hiking starts from, you have to be at the post by 08:15 am. At the post a ranger will read you the rules and regulations to follow on this experience, hire porters then start on the hike of about 4-6 hours heading to the summit of the volcano. At the top of the volcano you will enjoy amazing views of boiling lava in the lava lake, you will spend the night at the top of the volcano’s summit.
Day 4: descend back to Kibati and transfer back to Kigali
On the 4th and last day of the safari you will have early morning breakfast then leave the summit and start on your descending trek of about 4 hours back to the Kibati ranger post, at Kibati ranger post you will meet your safari driver and transfer back to Kigali. In Kigali you will be dropped off at your residence hotel or at Kigali international airport for your departure flight.
