Nanyuki’s Coriolis Effect Fascination

Nanyuki’s Coriolis Effect Fascination : One of the 13 countries in the globe where the equator crosses through is Kenya, and one of the towns that benefits from this unique location is Nanyuki, which should be explored on a Kenya safari in order to have the magnificent safari experience.

The equator point, which is located along the Nanyuki-Nairobi highway around 4 km from the city centre, is not very noticeable other than the numerous souvenir stores that line the route and the enormous yellow signboard that indicates its location.

However, the interesting phenomena known as the Coriolis effect only manifests itself near this imaginary line. Depending on which hemisphere you are in, the effect is related to the way water behaves at the equator.

The water in the southern hemisphere tends to flow anticlockwise if you are positioned south of the equator. You can see that the water is going in a clockwise pattern when you stand to the north. On the other side, the water appears motionless if you are standing at the actual equator.

The people in the area are always happy to arrange this trial for you. You could even obtain a certificate attesting to your presence at the Equator, if you so want. You can get both for USD 80.00 or simply the demo for USD 40.00.

It’s not too hard to set up the experiment on your own, though. A jug with a bottom hole, an empty bowl, water, and two matchsticks—small sticks would work just as well—are all you’ll need.

Proceed approximately 3 metres (10 degrees Fahrenheit) north of the equator and fill the jug with water while using your finger to seal the bottom hole and letting the sticks float on the water. Now take your finger from the jug’s bottom and let the water run into the empty bowl underneath.

The sticks will begin to revolve in a clockwise manner, as you will notice. When you carry out the identical activity south of the equator, you should observe that the sticks are rotating counter-clockwise. The experiment’s sticks remain motionless when conducted on the equator line! This is the action of the Coriolis force.

You may cross the equator just by walking from your hotel to the dining hall at the famed Fairmont Mount Kenya Safari Club, if you’d want to experience the Coriolis effect in a more elegant setting.

The Club reportedly boasts the unique feature of having a waiter who orders your drinks in the Southern Hemisphere and retrieves them in the Northern Hemisphere.  The Club has an even more fascinating nine-hole golf course. It is possible to putt in the northern hemisphere and tee off in the southern one.

Make sure to stop near the equator point and experience the Coriolis effect the next time you travel to Nanyuki. It’s really fascinating.
